School Counselors Provide the Following Direct and Indirect Services
Counseling
Individual and group counseling are provided and address issues that are preventative, developmental and remedial in nature. If long-term counseling is needed, counselors refer students to the appropriate outside services.
Guidance Curriculum
The guidance curriculum is a set of structured lessons that provide students with the knowledge and skills appropriate to their individual needs and developmental level. These guidance lessons are done in small and large groups and are integrated into the school’s overall curriculum.
Consultation
Counselors confer with students, parents, school staff and community/agency representatives to facilitate services for students’ specific needs.
Coordination
School Counselors assist other professionals in the coordination of a variety of school-wide and community activities.
Student Appraisal
Tests are analyzed and interpreted in addition to other measures of student achievement to determine the most appropriate services.
Program Planning
Counselors plan programs and activities in accordance to students’ particular needs and goals.
Professional Development
School Counselors adhere to ethical standards of their profession and participate in continuing education opportunities.
